The 2026 FIFA World Cup generated record betting activity across major US sportsbooks, with the Spain-Argentina final closing a tournament that operators said surpassed previous soccer wagering benchmarks and competed with some of the largest events in American sports.
Spain secured its second men’s World Cup title on July 19 after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time. Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute, delivering his first goal of the tournament and deciding a final that became the most-bet soccer match in the histories of several major operators.
The scale of betting extended across the full competition. Caesars Sportsbook reported that the World Cup generated a 30% higher bet count than the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments combined. Handle also finished “a few percentage points” above March Madness.
DraftKings recorded 650% more bets than during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, while BetMGM reported an increase of 211%.
Hard Rock Bet SVP of sportsbook Neil Walsh described the scale of interest in the tournament.
“This World Cup will go down as the biggest betting event in American history — we’re talking the equivalent of ten Super Bowls,” Walsh said. “A sport we were once told Americans would not embrace turned into one for the history books. The whole country wanted in.”
Spain-Argentina Final Sets New Sportsbook Highs
The final established new soccer records across multiple operators.
DraftKings accepted approximately 2 million wagers on the match, making Spain-Argentina the most-bet soccer game in its sportsbook history.
Caesars also recorded its largest soccer betting event to date. Handle on the final finished nearly 65% above the operator’s previous single-match record and reached 4.4 times the level of its record before the tournament began.
“The World Cup Final delivered the biggest soccer betting event in Caesars Sportsbook history,” the operator’s trading team said in a statement. “Interest was off the charts before kickoff, with pre-match wagering already surpassing our previous tournament record.”
Caesars set records for total handle and number of wagers, while also reaching a new high for unique bettors. The operator said the result was “underscoring the extraordinary interest in soccer’s biggest match and the incredible momentum we saw throughout the tournament.”
BetMGM also identified the final as its largest soccer event by both tickets and handle.
“The 2026 World Cup was record-breaking at BetMGM on many fronts, including the Spain-Argentina Final being the most-bet (tickets and handle) soccer match ever in company history,” BetMGM Senior Trading Manager Christian Cipollini said.
Another account of Cipollini’s statement rendered the wording as: “The 2026 World Cup was record-breaking at BetMGM on many fronts, including the Spain-Argentina Final being the most bet (tickets and handle) soccer match ever in company history,”
The final surpassed the previous BetMGM record established by the USA-Belgium round-of-32 match. Other heavily wagered fixtures included England-Norway and England-Mexico, alongside England-Argentina.
BetMGM said Spain-Argentina attracted more bets than individual games from the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Final. It also exceeded every March Madness game and every 2025 World Series game, as well as all College Football Playoff games except the championship between Indiana and Miami.
Tournament Growth Extends Beyond the Final
According to ESPN, betting interest grew throughout the nearly 40-day competition as the expanded World Cup took place in North America.
The tournament featured more matches than the 2022 edition, while favorable viewing times helped US audiences follow games more easily. Interest in the host nation also contributed to activity across daily markets and tournament futures.
Team USA became DraftKings’ most-bet team during the competition. The USMNT advanced to the round of 16 before losing to Belgium, with the supplied betting data identifying that fixture as one of the tournament’s biggest wagering events before the final established new records.
Lionel Messi attracted substantial betting interest throughout Argentina’s run to the final. DraftKings identified Messi as its most-bet player, while Argentina generated heavy ticket volume across the sportsbook market.
GeoComply recorded 7.6 million location checks during Argentina’s late-night match against Algeria, a figure higher than the activity recorded for many primetime games.
Player preferences varied between operators. Kylian Mbappé represented BetMGM’s largest player liability ahead of Messi and Erling Haaland, while FanDuel reported that the French forward was its most popular goalscorer selection.
BetMGM’s tournament futures data showed France attracting 14.9% of tickets to win the World Cup, compared with Spain at 13.2%. France accounted for 21.1% of futures handle, while Spain drew 19.9%. Argentina accounted for 11%.
France’s 2-0 semifinal defeat to Spain therefore produced a favorable result for BetMGM.
Spain’s victory in the final also gave sportsbooks a generally positive outcome in several markets.
Caesars reported that 61% of tickets backed Argentina in the three-way moneyline market. Spain attracted 52% of the handle to win in regulation, while the draw represented 6% of the money wagered.
“There were also plenty of tickets written on Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal to score, resulting in positive outcomes across both our straight markets and Same Game Parlay product,” Caesars Head of Soccer Mark Bickerdike said.
Spain winning the tournament produced a “favorable result” for Caesars in its futures book.
Bickerdike added that there were still “plenty of happy bettors who backed them before the tournament, as they were our second most-wagered team heading into the competition.”
Home-Soil World Cup Expands US Betting Interest
Sportsbook executives linked the increase in betting partly to the tournament taking place in North America.
When Qatar hosted the 2022 World Cup, fewer than 30 US jurisdictions offered regulated sports wagering. Four years later, the market had expanded while operators had developed broader betting products and marketing strategies around soccer.
“This record-breaking final capped off a fantastic tournament. A home-nation World Cup brought high expectations for engagement and interest,” Bickerdike said. “Thankfully, the tournament exceeded even our most optimistic projections and we saw strong participation across Futures, event markets, and our Same Game Parlay product.
“There was some uncertainty around the impact of an extended tournament format, but World Cup fever took hold following the USMNT’s promising start, and that enthusiasm continued throughout the knockout stages and into the final.”
DraftKings also saw increased engagement among customers using its Spanish-language platform functionality, which launched in November 2025 across its sportsbook and online casino products.
The operator reported a 250% increase in active Spanish-language soccer customers during the World Cup.
DraftKings Sportsbook Director Johnny Avello described considerable variation in operator results during the competition.
“We’ve had some monster handle games,” Avello said. “We’ve had some really great days. We’ve had some days where we got totally destroyed.
The influx of customers during the tournament could also give sportsbooks a larger user base ahead of the US football season.
“They’re going to have a bigger and wider population to cast a net over from a marketing strategy to get them involved in the NFL,” Matt Bakowicz, Director of Sports Management Program at American University’s Kogod School of Business, said.
Sportsbooks Turn Attention to the 2030 World Cup
Operators have already released early markets for the next World Cup.
DraftKings opened defending champion Spain at +450 to win again in 2030. France followed at +600, while England stood at +900 alongside Portugal.
Argentina opened at 11-1, while co-host Morocco was priced at 35-1. The United States and Mexico were both listed at 80-1.
Bet365 also installed Spain as its early favorite at 9/2. France followed at 6/1, with Portugal at 7/1.
“They [Spain] certainly warmed to the task of being pre-tournament favorites, and we are giving them that status again – especially with them as one of the co-hosts with the World Cup split between Spain, Portugal and Morocco,” bet365 Trading Expert Steve Freeth said.
